HOW TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH

2.jpg

THINK ABOUT IT…

Do you re-use your dental floss after using it ?  Do you re-use your fork after using it and leaving it in the sink or the dishwasher all night ?  Do you re-use plastic forks, spoons, etc. ?

No you don’t….but why ?  Because after one use those utensils become contaminated with bacteria.  Bacteria from your food, your mouth, your hands and your environment.  You know this so you avoid using these products more than once…unless you thoroughly disinfect them.

So why do you keep using the same toothbrush for days, weeks or months on end ?!

Now there’s a better option…Daily Disposable Toothbrushes…from BrushPak !

Our Affiliated Dental Professionals recommend the steps below for your healthiest brushing regimen.

FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW CAREFULLY TO PROPERLY BRUSH YOUR TEETH

STEP 1 - PROPERLY AND THOROUGHLY WASH YOUR HANDS

You should never touch your face, mouth, nose or eyes without thoroughly washing your hands.  Our hands are constantly picking up bacteria from objects in our environment that can be transferred to our mucous membranes and make us sick.  In fact the one object you are touching all day long (your smart phone) probably has more bacteria on it than your toilet seat.

How should you wash your hands? (CDC Recommendations)

•    Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

•    Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.

•    Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.

•    Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

•    Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Why?
Read the science behind the recommendations.

When should you wash your hands?

*****ALWAYS BEFORE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH******

•    Before, during, and after preparing food

•    Before AND after eating food

•    Before and after caring for someone who is sick

•    Before and after treating a cut or wound

•    After using the toilet

•    After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet

•    After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

•    After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste

•    After handling pet food or pet treats

•    After touching garbage

•    Before putting in contact lenses

•    Before touching your face, nose, mouth or eyes in any capacity

*****ENSURING YOUR HANDS ARE CLEAN BEFORE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH IS ESSENTIAL TO YOUR ORAL CARE ROUTINE*****

STEP 2 - SELECT A BrushPak™ BRAND DISPOSABLE TOOTHBRUSH

Remove a BrushPak™ disposable toothbrush from its cellophane packaging. Be sure to store your toothbrushes in the original 90 pack bag in a location free from bacteria (i.e. not near your toilet) whenever possible and always wash your hands before touching the bag to open it. If there are bacteria transferred from your hand (or your environment) to the bag then you are increasing your chance of infection.

STEP 3 - APPLY TOOTHPASTE

Dispense a pea-sized amount of BrushPak™ Brand toothpaste or your favorite toothpaste brand onto your clean finger and then apply the toothpaste to your BrushPak™ Brand Disposable Toothbrush.

*****DO NOT TOUCH THE TOOTHPASTE DISPENSER TO THE TOOTHBRUSH*****

Toothpaste tubes/dispensers can build up bacteria from repeated touching to contaminated toothbrushes and also from their storage environment, just like toothbrushes.  To ensure bacteria-free brushing you must make sure that the dispenser opening is sterile.  To do this you may clean the dispenser opening with an alcohol swab, alcohol based mouthwash or hold the tube opening under hot water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching the dispenser opening to the toothbrush at all times to avoid cross-contamination. Store your toothpaste tube/dispenser where it will not come into contact with environmental bacteria.

PastePaks™ by BrushPak™are single-use disposable toothpaste packs that avoid the repeated touching of toothbrushes to contaminated toothpaste tubes.

STEP 4 - BrushPak™ AFFILIATED DENTISTS RECOMMEND USING THE MODIFIED BASS METHOD OF TOOTHBRUSHING

Modified Bass brushing technique:

•    Rinse with water to clear the mouth of food residue and removed plaque. Clear as much of this debris as possible by rinsing before you brush. This will decrease the amount of debris that ends up on your toothbrush

•    Hold the head of the toothbrush horizontally against your teeth with the bristles part-way on the gums

•    Tilt the brush head to about a 45-degree angle, so the bristles are pointing under the gum line.

•    Move the toothbrush in very short horizontal strokes so the tips of the bristles stay in one place, but the head of the brush waggles back and forth. Or use tiny circular motions. This allows the bristles to slide gently under the gum. Do this for about 20 strokes. This assures that adequate time will be spent cleaning away as much plaque as possible. Note: this is a very gentle motion. In healthy gums, this should cause no pain. Brushing too vigorously or with large strokes can damage gum tissue.

•    Roll or flick the brush so that the bristles move out from under the gum toward the biting edge of the tooth. This helps move the plaque out from under the gum line.

•    Repeat for every tooth, so that all tooth surfaces and gum lines are cleaned.

•    For the insides of your front teeth, where the horizontal brush position is cumbersome, hold the brush vertically instead. Again, use gentle back and forth brushing action and finish with a roll or flick of the brush toward the biting edge.

•    To clean the biting or chewing surfaces of the teeth, hold the brush so the bristles are straight down on the flat surface of the molars.

•    Gently move the brush back and forth or in tiny circles to clean the entire surface. Move to a new tooth or area until all teeth are cleaned.

•    Rinse with water to clear the mouth of food residue and removed plaque.

•    You can clear even more bacteria out of your mouth by brushing your tongue. With your toothbrush, brush firmly but gently from back to front. Do not go so far back in your mouth that you gag. Rinse again.

STEP 5 - DISPOSE OF YOUR TOOTHBRUSH AT LEAST DAILY

To achieve Bacteria-Free Brushing BrushPak Affiliated Dentists recommend disposing of BrushPak Brand disposable toothbrushes after each use.

If you plan to use the toothbrushes as a daily disposable BrushPak™ Affiliated Dentists recommend rinsing your toothbrush with warm to hot sterile water (WARNING –DO NOT EXPOSE YOUR SKIN TO HOT WATER) for at least 20 seconds immediately after use.  Place the brush in an uncovered toothbrush stand and store it on a windowsill far away from your bathroom where it will receive direct sunlight.  This method of toothbrush storage has been shown in studies to reduce the bacterial growth as much as possible on your toothbrush over time but it will not guarantee 100% bacteria-free brushing.  Rubbing the bristles for at least 20 seconds under warm water before rinsing under hot water may remove even more debris and bacteria. Mechanical Friction has been shown in studies to kill more pathogens.

Bamboo toothbrushes from BrushPak™ allow you to get thehealth benefits of a daily disposable toothbrush without worrying about damaging the environment.

A brand new toothbrush is shown (at top) followed by brushes used once, twice, three and four times. BrushPak™ Affiliated Dentists believe that 3-4 uses is about the max life of a toothbrush even with proper storage and cleaning (as it will quickly build up micro-organisms and they will continue to grow on the brush with repeated use). Pay attention to the BrushPak™ Logo Use Indicator to know when to throw your brush into the recycle bin. See BrushPak™….The Science for more information on toothbrush contamination from use over time. Dispose of your toothbrush no later than 24 hours after initial use.
